Sicily 4 - driving to Piazza Armerina

In October, Pietro and Marijke were in Sicily and visited a Roman villa near the out-of-the-way town of Piazza Armerina.  The villa has many spectacular mosaics, and really is a must-see.  So we bit the bullet (Barbara did) and hired a car to go there.  Considering she would not normally go down Stromness street in the car, Barbara did well in the busy, nerve-wracking and even narrower streets of the hill towns we passed through.

It was our only chance to see the countryside at large properly, and not just through bus windows ...

Barbara is just visible finalising the car hire bottom left, below the baroque facade of Sante Purgatorio

From the car, we just caught a glimpse of this small village emerging from the waters of the lake which had engulfed it when a hydro-electric scheme was built after the war

We stopped in this quiet valley to stretch our legs
A goatherd hurries his flock along the road - we were a bit paranoid about the paintwork of the hire car - these horns are sharp!

More livestock appeared and shot across the road!

This jolly cypress tree welcomes us to a hill town

Our destination - Piazza Armerina - very narrow streets again hazarding Europcar's paintwork!
