Leaving Ferrara ...

On Saturday, after a grand breakfast, we ventured out into the crowded streets and headed to the Estense castle - fortified home of the d'Este family from 1385 until 1597.  It was a foggy day again, which added to the gothic gloom of the scene.

B&B headed for the train in the afternoon, levying D&D to stay one more night in Ferrara.
At breakfast - Barbara not ready for the camera ...
Cyclamen on the sill of our room
The castle moat - apparently designed to repel oppressed tenants rather than rival warlords
Bill not ready for the camera ...
The claustrophobic interior of one of the dungeons
Aldo Pizzi and other prisoners beguiled the time by writing their names on the ceiling using the smoke from a candle flame
Mirrors are strategically placed to facilitate viewing the frescoed ceilings
The grand Corso d'Este leading from the castle to the "New Town" - built in the 1500s
The same street, looking back at the castle - also in monochrome ...
When we left the castle, the fog had cleared and the sun came out
We got mixed up in a fun-run on the way to the railway station
