Hike up to Sommocolonia

Saturday was a nice dry day, so we decided on a hike up to the hilltop village of Sommocolonia, the first village we walked to back in the summer of 2012.  The spring flowers are coming along slowly - we saw hellebores, snowdrops, crocuses, snowdrops and celandines all making a start.

Quite a stiff climb - we're a bit out of practice!

Sommocolonia on its ridge
Still a wintry feel to the paths

The old road still mostly intact - a pleasure to walk on
Stinking Hellebore - Helleborus foetidus - the robust, and apparently wrongly named, cousin to the commoner green hellebore ...
Green Hellebore - Helleborus viridis - occurs abundantly in the woodlands here
Snowdrops, but no snow this year ...
Looking East long the ridge - the Appenines looking more distant than they actually are
Perfect wood stack seen on the way down

    1. We have enjoyed this woodstack, or its annual incarnation, for five years now. It must make them weep to have to burn it!
