On Friday, we drove over to the other side of the Apuan Alps, to the coastal town of Pietrasanta. Michelangelo had connections with the town because of its proximity to the marble quarries of Carrara, and it has remained a town of sculptors and artists ever since. A notable Colombian artist, Fernando Botero, lives and works in the town.
By chance, Pietrasanta is at present hosting an exhibition of salvador Dali bronzes. Apparently the exhibition has already been to Beijing, London and New York, and been seen by millions. It is a testimony to tiny Pietrasanta's prestige as a centre of art that the town landed the exhibition at all.
