Obernai across the Alps to Bergamo

Our route took us through Switzerland to the northern Italian city of Bergamo.  It was a bit of a dull day, so the views of distant mountain scenery were denied to us.  We had intended to go through the St Gotthard tunnel (9 miles), but in the event, the weather being dry and warmish, we opted to go over the top - the St Gotthard pass - 2000 m high - around 7000 ft.

It was pretty wild up there - rather like the Scottish highlands in fact!
Heading down past Lake Lucerne
A cascade seen at a stop on the St Gotthard pass

Rugged rocks at the same stop

To our astonishment, this little train suddenly appeared out of a tunnel, and disappeared over the horizon!
Looking back at a wintry scene ...
... and even more wintry
More trains - the funicular rail line between the lower and upper parts of Bergamo
Driver relaxing at last - over a pizza of course!
